Formosa
Bañado La Estrella
Duration: 4 days / 3 nights
Bañado La Estrella is a remote stretch of land deep in the Argentine north, lying along the border with Paraguay, where borders blur and the city simply does not exist. It is the second largest wetland in our country: a living floodplain, sculpted by the overflows of the Pilcomayo River, where the trees of the forest are embraced by the water and ancient vines give life to the mythical champales. It is a pure landscape in the most visceral sense of the word; one of those hidden corners unknown even to the vast majority of Argentines, reserved for those who look at the world with a sensitive pulse and are willing to be moved by the immensity.
Our journey begins at dawn on the calm waters of the wetland, navigating in canoes launched and paddled by locals who know every secret channel among caimans, capybaras, and the low flight of the jabiru. It is an intimate and rugged trip: we stay in authentic Creole outposts, sharing mate and meals with those who inhabit the solitude of the wetland, learning to read a territory where nature imposes its own pace.
The expedition continues crossing the wild course of the Bermejo River into the Chaco province, delving into the heart of El Impenetrable National Park. There, in alliance with wildlife conservation and restoration projects led by Rewilding Argentina, we spend the night immersed in the nocturnal concert of the Chaco forest under a blanket of clear stars. During the day, we walk forest trails and spend time with master artisans who keep the ancestral chaguar technique intact: collecting the wild understory plant, defibering it by hand, and dyeing it with roots, resins, and fruits of the earth.
This trip does not seek to sugarcoat reality, but to embrace it with respect. It is a deep immersion into historical memory, the worldview of native communities, and the wounds that shaped the territory—such as the tragic Rincón Bomba Massacre of 1947. A brief but transformative journey, designed for those seeking to understand the wild, rustic, and true soul of the American Gran Chaco.
